Nordvestparken arose from collaboration. Landscape architects SLA teamed with writer Jan Sonnergaard. Together, they shaped this much-needed green space. Nordvestparken is described as an adventurous park. It offers endless possibilities for activities. Grills invite communal feasts. Chess games spark friendly competition. A theater space encourages creativity. The park reflects the welcoming spirit of Nordvest.
Dominating Nordvestparken are its striking features. Paths wind through the landscape. Trees provide shade and beauty. Unique lighting enhances the atmosphere. Cone-shaped hills rise dramatically. These three hills stand at 8, 11, and 15 meters tall. They mark the park’s distinct zones.
The 1001 Trees concept is a highlight of Nordvestparken. Over 100 trees representing 63 species populate the area. Each tree bears a sign. The signs reveal the tree’s name, origin, and uses. This botanical diversity brings nature into Nordvest. It forms a contrast to the district’s urban environment.
Nordvestparken lacks a central focal point. Instead, it encourages exploration. Intersecting paths create meeting points. A paved trail system connects the park’s elements. The park’s design is inspired by the Milky Way. Star-shaped seating areas dot the landscape. These offer inviting spaces to relax. Poems by children are imprinted in the asphalt. Various projections add to the sensory experience. These features create an enchanting atmosphere in Nordvestparken.
Architects embraced color and form in Nordvestparken’s design. The lighting stands out as a key feature. Breaking from traditional Nordic style, it uses vibrant hues. The lighting design is a visual and artistic statement. Hundreds of lamps illuminate the park. Each tree is individually lit. This creates a magical ambiance during evenings and dark months. The upward-facing lights minimize vandalism.
In 2010, SLA won the Danish Lighting Award. The jury praised the lighting’s use of the park’s architecture and objects. They said the joyful colors and varied scenes make the space inviting. Nordvestparken is an unpretentious urban space ready to be enjoyed.
Nordvestparken sits within a rectangle. Frederikssundsvej, Romsgårdsvej/Hulgårdsvej, Stærevej, and Gråspurvevej define its borders. The park connects to the playground at Hulgårds Plads.
