Can a lighthouse whisper secrets of the sea? Nordre Røse Fyr certainly can. This granite sentinel, standing proudly in the Drogden sound, has witnessed over a century of maritime history. Nordre Røse Fyr isn’t just any lighthouse. It’s Denmark’s first bottom-fixed lighthouse, built in 1877. Imagine the engineering feat it was to construct this sturdy structure on a four-meter high foundation, right here in the challenging waters of the Øresund. Originally, Nordre Røse Fyr featured a revolving lens, casting alternating red and white beams across the waves. This beacon guided ships safely through the treacherous Drogden channel. However, the unforgiving Øresund winters tested its strength. In the brutal winter of 1892-1893, the ice’s relentless pressure damaged the original structure. The lighthouse underwent significant repairs and reinforcements. Imagine the sight of this stoic structure battling the elements. The lighthouse was even fitted with ice-breaking features to protect it from future icy onslaughts. In 1906, Nordre Røse Fyr embraced new technology, transforming into a sector-divided leading light. A new lantern, drum lens, and incandescent burner, fueled by acetylene gas, replaced the old system. The gas was produced right here, in the lighthouse’s own small gasworks. This upgrade marked a step forward in maritime safety. The advancements continued in 1926 when Nordre Røse Fyr was electrified. A powerful 550W incandescent bulb, boasting an impressive 45,871 candela, replaced the gas-powered light. Until the 1960s, dedicated keepers lived and worked here, ensuring the light guided ships safely through the sound. Two teams of three keepers would each spend a week at Nordre Røse Fyr, before being relieved by the other team. Today, Nordre Røse Fyr remains a vital aid to navigation, remotely controlled from the Drogden Fyr. Its white light pierces the darkness for 17 nautical miles, while the red and green sector lights reach 13 nautical miles. So, as you stand before Nordre Røse Fyr, listen closely. You might just hear the whispers of seafarers, guided safely home by this steadfast beacon.
