Have you heard the story of Noe Zhordania a Georgian leader buried far from his homeland? This is the final resting place of Noe Zhordania. He was a prominent figure in Georgia’s fight for independence.

Noe Zhordania played a crucial role in the socialist movement. This was during the time of the Russian Empire. Later he led the Democratic Republic of Georgia. He served as head of government from 1918 to 1921.

However the Bolshevik Red Army invaded Georgia. This forced Noe Zhordania into exile in France. He continued to lead the government-in-exile. He remained in France until his death in 1953.

Born in 1868 Noe Zhordania came from Lanchkhuti in western Georgia. He was a journalist before entering politics. He studied at the Georgian Orthodox Theological Seminary. Initially his parents hoped he would become a priest. But Noe Zhordania started to question religion early in life.

In the 1890s Noe Zhordania spread Marxist ideas in Tbilisi. He became a leader of the first legal Marxist organization in Georgia. This group was known as Mesame Dasi or The Third Group. Despite facing imprisonment and exile Noe Zhordania remained committed.

The 1917 Russian Revolution created an opportunity for Georgia. It allowed them to break free from the Russian Empire. Noe Zhordania was key in creating an independent Georgia. On May 26 1918 Georgia declared its independence. Noe Zhordania became its prime minister.

He is remembered for his agrarian reforms. Noe Zhordania confiscated land from large landowners. His government introduced labor laws. These laws included an eight-hour workday. They also included collective contracts.

In 1921 Soviet forces annexed Georgia. Noe Zhordania and other government members sought refuge in Paris. There he continued to lead the government-in-exile. After the failed revolt against the Soviets in 1924 Noe Zhordania spoke out. He revealed the horrors happening in Georgia. The Russian secret police were killing hundreds without trial. Victims included women and children. Many were from prominent Georgian families.

Noe Zhordania never returned to his homeland. He died in France and was buried here. This cemetery is for Georgians who emigrated to Europe. Noe Zhordania married and had four children. His daughter Asmat Zhordania became a French ballerina. His son Redjeb Jordania became a professor in New York. He taught French history and was also an author.

Noe Zhordania’s journey took him from Georgia to Paris. He experienced revolution exile and unwavering dedication. Though he is buried far from his homeland his legacy lives on. He is remembered as a leader who fought for Georgia’s independence. He stood for democracy in the face of Soviet oppression.
