Picture this. You stand at the heart of Marseille’s Noailles district. A whirlwind of sights and sounds assaults your senses. This vibrant neighborhood pulsates with a unique energy. It’s a melting pot of cultures and a testament to Marseille’s rich history.

Noailles boasts a fascinating past. In the 17th century it was home to Marseille’s wealthiest residents. Lieutenant Jacques de Noailles himself lived here. He was Lieutenant of the Galleys and a Representative of King Louis XIV. The area’s name honors this influential figure. A Capuchin convent once stood here. Established in 1665 it was later declared national property in 1791. The monks were expelled. Today the Marché des Capucins a bustling food market occupies that very spot. The rue Longue des Capucins a narrow street also remains. It connects Noailles to other districts.

The year 1666 was pivotal. The rue des Nobles and La Canebière were created. Noailles then housed a primarily bourgeois population. Grand hotels like the Hôtel de Manse the Hôtel Mirabeau and the Grand Hôtel de Noailles were built. Even Mahatma Gandhi stayed in one of these hotels in 1931. He was accompanied by his two goats. Can you imagine?

The neighborhood grew and expanded in the 1850s. A tramway line opened in 1893. This line eventually became the Noailles metro station. The Marché des Capucins opened in 1956. It’s now Noailles’ most famous landmark. The market’s colorful stalls overflow with goods from around the world. You can find spices textiles jewelry and delicious food. This vibrant market perfectly reflects Noailles’ multicultural spirit.

Noailles offers much more than its market. It is a gateway to the Cours Julien district. This area is a haven for designers and street artists. The staircase at 99 rue d’Aubagne connects the two districts. It offers stunning views of Cours Lieutaud. The Daki Ling Le Jardin Des Muses is another highlight. It’s a cultural space hosting shows for all ages. You can find theater dance puppet shows and even circus arts.

The Mazenod Theatre another cultural gem opened in 1934. It is one of Marseille’s oldest theaters. The former Grand Hôtel de Noailles now houses the local police department. Noailles’ history is rich and complex. It’s a neighborhood where the past is present. This blend of old and new is precisely what makes Noailles so captivating. It’s a neighborhood you can’t help but fall in love with.
