Gazing at this striking structure one might ask Is it a spaceship Or is it a flower. It is in fact the Niterói Contemporary Art Museum. This iconic landmark graces the city of Niterói in Rio de Janeiro Brazil. It stands as a testament to architectural brilliance and artistic vision.

The Niterói Contemporary Art Museum is commonly called MAC. It is one of the city’s main landmarks. The MAC was completed in 1996. Oscar Niemeyer designed the museum. Structural engineer Bruno Contarini assisted him. Contarini had collaborated with Niemeyer on previous projects.

Imagine Niemeyer flying over Rio de Janeiro in a UFO. This is not a dream but a scene from a film. The UFO lands on the cliffside. This is said to be the origin of the museum itself.

The structure is 16 meters high. Its cupola has a 50-meter diameter. The museum boasts three floors. It houses a collection of 1217 works. These works come from art collector João Sattamini. He assembled this collection since the 1950s. It is the second-largest contemporary art collection in Brazil.

The Niterói Contemporary Art Museum projects itself over Boa Viagem beach. The 817 square meters reflecting pool surrounds the cylindrical base. Niemeyer described it as a flower.

A wide access slope leads to the Hall of Expositions. It accommodates sixty people. Two doors reveal a viewing gallery. From here behold Guanabara Bay Rio de Janeiro and Sugarloaf Mountain. The saucer-shaped modernist structure resembles a UFO. It sits on a cliffside above a beach.

But its history is not without controversy. The MAC Scandal involved a political land acquisition. The sub-mayor of Niterói’s Oceanic Region Zeca Mocarzel played a key role. He convinced the landowner that construction rights were locked. This allowed him to purchase the land at a low price. The city council quickly approved the museum project. After the MAC’s inauguration property values soared. The land was sold for over 5 million reals. This occurred shortly before Christmas 1996. Locals joked it was a Christmas gift to themselves.

Beyond the scandal the Niterói Contemporary Art Museum has gained popularity. It served as a pit stop on The Amazing Race. It also featured in a U.S. TV commercial for The Legend of Zelda.

The Niteroi Contemporary Art Museum has become one of Rio de Janeiro’s best-known landmarks. Niemeyer described it as a flower growing from the rocks. Public access is via a 98 m long swirling red-carpeted ramp.

The hexagonal main hall provides 400 sq. m of column-free exhibition space. A circular viewing promenade features windows angled at 40-degrees. This offers panoramic views of Sugar Loaf Mountain and Guanabara Bay.

The MAC helped create a small-scale Bilbao effect. It attracted tourists to this area of Niteroi for the first time. The Niterói Contemporary Art Museum stands as a symbol. It is a symbol of art architecture and controversy. It invites us to reflect. It encourages us to question. It inspires us to appreciate the beauty around us.
