Originally built as an open-air stadium, the Ninoy Aquino Stadium stands before us. It’s more than just a sporting arena. This is a place with a rich history. Let’s delve into the story of the Ninoy Aquino Stadium.

In the 1950s, this stadium was constructed. It was built in time to host the 1954 Asian Games. Imagine the excitement felt here during those games.

By the 1980s, the stadium transitioned. It transformed into an indoor arena. It was then known as the Rizal Multi-Purpose Arena.

The year 1989 marked a significant change. The arena was renamed Ninoy Aquino Stadium. This renaming honored Philippine Senator Ninoy Aquino. A marker dedicating the arena was unveiled. New chairs and a scoring system were installed. Korean technicians oversaw the installation.

The Ninoy Aquino Stadium has hosted numerous events. The 1991 Southeast Asian Games volleyball tournament took place here. In 2005, it hosted the Southeast Asian Games table tennis competitions. The 2013 FIBA Asia Championship also used this stadium as a venue.

College basketball games often electrify this arena. UAAP and NCAA games have thrilled fans here. Taekwondo tournaments have tested athletes’ skills. Even PBA games have found a temporary home here. The Manila Metrostars once played their home games here.

For the 2019 Southeast Asian Games, the Ninoy Aquino Stadium underwent renovations. Taekwondo and weightlifting competitions were held here. New seats and air-conditioning were installed. The goal was to modernize the facility. Both NCAA and UAAP expressed interest in returning here.

However, the stadium’s story took an unexpected turn. In April 2020, it was repurposed. The Ninoy Aquino Stadium became a quarantine and isolation center. This was during the height of the COVID-19 pandemic. The 6000 seats were left untouched.

In 2023, the Ninoy Aquino Stadium received a special donation. The wooden flooring from the Araneta Coliseum’s FIBA Basketball World Cup was gifted here.

Consider the multitude of events witnessed within these walls. From the Asian Games in 1954 to the Asian Rhythmic Gymnastics Championships in 2023. The 1989 ABC Under-18 Championship and the Southeast Asian Games in multiple years have been hosted here. Even Hillsong United held a live concert here in 2008.

The Ninoy Aquino Stadium stands as a testament to resilience. It is a versatile venue. It has adapted to serve different needs. It’s a place where sports and history intertwine. It continues to be a significant landmark in Manila. The Ninoy Aquino Stadium remains a vibrant part of the Rizal Memorial Sports Complex.
