Ninkasi Kao, part of the Ninkasi family, blends the American craft beer experience with Lyon’s vibrant cultural scene. Ninkasi Kao opened its doors in 2000. It was built right next to the original Ninkasi brewery in Gerland. The original brewery opened in 1997. It was the brainchild of Christophe Fargier. He brought the microbrewery concept from the United States to Lyon. The idea was simple: craft beers, tasty burgers, and live music. This original brewery in Gerland had a small concert space. After three years of packed shows, they needed more room. This led to the creation of Ninkasi Kao, a much larger venue next door. Ninkasi Kao quickly became a hub for indie music in Lyon. For over 20 years, it has hosted a diverse range of genres. Everything from rap and techno to rock and beyond has graced its stage. Ninkasi Kao isn’t named after a Japanese sushi or geisha. It’s a nod to Ninkasi, the Sumerian goddess of beer. This connection emphasizes the brewery’s dedication to the craft. Ninkasi Kao continues to be a beloved spot in Lyon.
