Is it possible for a water tower to be a work of art? Look at the Leaning Tower of Niles. You might think you’ve been transported to Italy. This isn’t the Tower of Pisa. It’s a half-sized replica, nestled right here in Niles, Illinois. This quirky landmark has a fascinating story. It begins with Robert Ilg, a successful businessman who wanted to create a special recreational park for his employees in the 1920s. He envisioned Ilgair Park, a 22-acre oasis with two large outdoor pools. These pools needed a significant water supply. So, a large water tank was necessary. But Ilg, a man of refined taste, didn’t want a plain water tower spoiling the park’s beauty. He had a brilliant, some might say eccentric, idea. He decided to conceal the water tank within a replica of the Leaning Tower of Pisa. Construction began in 1931, bringing this unique vision to life. The Niles Water Tower stands 94 feet tall, leaning at a jaunty 7.4 feet, just like its Italian counterpart. It was completed in 1934, becoming a whimsical addition to the landscape. In 1960, the Ilg family donated part of the park for the Leaning Tower YMCA. The tower’s care was entrusted to the YMCA, with the agreement they’d maintain it until 2059. Unfortunately, time and the elements took their toll. Cracks appeared in the concrete, and the allocated maintenance budget proved insufficient. By the 1990s, the Niles Water Tower was in need of serious attention. The Village of Niles, recognizing its value as a local landmark, stepped in. They forged a sister city relationship with Pisa, Italy in 1991. Then, in 1995, they embarked on a $1.2 million restoration project. The tower was repaired, new lights were installed, and a beautiful plaza was created. Four fountains, a reflecting pool, and even a telefono booth were added, enhancing the tower’s charm. The Leaning Tower of Niles isn’t just a water tower. It’s a symbol of ingenuity, community pride, and a touch of whimsy. The Niles Water Tower even earned a place on the National Register of Historic Places in 2019. So, next time you’re in Niles, take a moment to appreciate this unique landmark. It’s a testament to the power of imagination and the enduring appeal of a slightly tilted tower.
