In a quiet corner of Leipzig-Grünau, an unassuming stone monument stands. This is the Nikolai-Rumjanzew-Denkmal. It bears only three names, but it holds a powerful story of resistance. The Nikolai-Rumjanzew-Denkmal commemorates Nikolai Rumjanzew, a Soviet forced laborer, and his comrades. They dared to defy the Nazi regime during World War II. Nikolai Rumjanzew, a skilled metalworker, arrived in Leipzig as a prisoner of war. He was forced to work at the Mitteldeutsche Motorenwerke in Taucha. Despite the harsh conditions, Rumjanzew’s spirit remained unbroken. He established the “International Anti-fascist Committee” in 1943. This group consisted of Soviet forced laborers, German communists, and prisoners of war. Together, they worked tirelessly to distribute anti-Nazi leaflets. Their aim was to incite an uprising against the oppressive regime. Their secret printing press was hidden in the garden shed of Maximilian Hauke, a German communist in Kleinzschocher. The group’s bravery came at a heavy price. In 1944, the Gestapo uncovered their activities. Rumjanzew and 81 other resistance fighters were arrested. The Soviet members were deported to Auschwitz. The German members faced the People’s Court. Nikolai Rumjanzew was murdered in Auschwitz in the summer of 1944. The Nikolai-Rumjanzew-Denkmal is more than just a stone. It is a testament to the courage of those who resisted tyranny, even in the face of unimaginable hardship. It serves as a poignant reminder of the human cost of war and the importance of fighting for what is right.
