Ready for a blast from the past? Here we stand before the Nike Missile Site SF-88 a relic of the Cold War. This launch site at Fort Barry in the Marin Headlands protected San Francisco from Soviet bombers.

Imagine the tension. The year is 1954. Construction is underway. The San Francisco Chronicle reports four Nike sites are being built nearby. This is a crucial part of a defense system against a potential Soviet attack. The site was initially armed with Nike Ajax missiles. Later modifications allowed it to also fire Nike Hercules missiles.

These weren’t just any missiles. They were powerful weapons designed for a devastating response. Think of the incredible engineering. The sheer weight of the missiles was five tons each. Volunteers spent years painstakingly restoring these weapons. They used missile parts originally costing 30 million dollars. It’s a testament to dedication.

The site wasn’t just about launching missiles. It was a complex operation. It had an integrated fire control area SF-88C on Wolf Ridge. This contained a High Power Acquisition Radar a 50-foot tall tower and dome. The dome and tower are gone now. Only the gravel pad remains. Target tracking radar towers are still there. Although they are quite dilapidated.

In 1974 the Nike Missile Site SF-88 was closed. However it wasn’t demolished. As part of SALT I one missile site from each side could be saved for historical reasons. SF-88 was the US choice. This site was transferred to the National Park Service. This preserved it as a reminder of Cold War history.

Today the Nike Missile Site SF-88L the launch area is open to visitors. You can explore the launch area. See where these enormous missiles were prepared for launch. Volunteers and park staff maintain this unique place. They offer tours every 45 minutes on Saturdays. The first Saturday of each month is a special open house with Nike veterans. They share their stories and knowledge. It’s a chance to understand a pivotal part of history. A part of history that involved incredible weapons systems aimed at a potential enemy. A powerful reminder of the Cold War era. A time of great fear and tension.
