Niendorf/Ostsee whispers tales of transformation. A simple farming village in 1385, Niendorf/Ostsee became a beloved seaside resort. Niendorf/Ostsee first welcomed bathers in 1855. Innkeeper Johann Johannsen placed two bathing machines on the beach in front of his lodging house. This simple act marked the beginning of Niendorf/Ostsee’s journey to becoming a popular tourist destination. The lodging house still stands today, known as Johannsens Kurhotel. Niendorf/Ostsee continued to grow, adding attractions like a spa park in 1895. Napoleon’s plan in 1810 to transform the Aalbek River into a haven for French warships thankfully never materialized. The Aalbek area remains a beautiful natural landscape. The Vogelpark, opened in 1973 near the Aalbek, houses a world-renowned owl collection and various other bird species. Nearby lies the Räuberkuhle, remnants of a 13th-century robber baron’s castle. Legend links this spot to the notorious pirate Klaus Störtebeker. A scenic path along the Brodtener cliffs offers stunning views of Lübeck Bay. Niendorf/Ostsee officially became part of the municipality of Timmendorfer Strand in 1945. The post-war economic boom fueled further growth. A seawater drinking hall, built in 1953, later became the “Haus des Kurgastes” in 1967. Niendorf/Ostsee’s recognition as a Baltic seaside resort in 1954 solidified its status. The construction of a new pier in 1966 and the opening of a seawater swimming pool in 1975 further enhanced its appeal. The charming Niendorf/Ostsee harbor, built between 1920 and 1922, belies its relatively young age. It stands as a testament to the village’s evolution from a humble fishing village to a thriving seaside resort. Today, Niendorf/Ostsee welcomes thousands of guests annually. They come to enjoy its unique charm, sandy beaches, and the tranquil beauty of the Baltic Sea.
