Was this charming village always a seaside escape? Niendorf, with its picturesque harbor, wasn’t always the tranquil haven it appears to be today. Niendorf’s story begins way back in 1385. It was first mentioned as “Nyendorpe” then. Imagine a simple farming village, its fate tied to the whims of the sea. The people of Niendorf, though, couldn’t even fish in those early days. The lucrative fishing rights belonged solely to the fishermen of Lubeck. It wasn’t until 1817, over 400 years later, that they could finally cast their nets freely. The sea, however, had other plans. In 1872, a devastating storm surge ravaged the coast. Waves surged over 3.5 meters high, swallowing homes and lives. Twelve houses were completely destroyed, fifteen partially, and four souls tragically perished. It was a stark reminder of the sea’s untamed power. Yet, Niendorf persevered. By the late 19th century, a new era dawned – the era of seaside tourism. The year 1855 saw the arrival of two simple bathing machines on Niendorf’s shore. This marked its transformation into a seaside resort. The allure of the sea, once feared, now drew visitors seeking respite and rejuvenation. The village blossomed, with hotels, a pier, and even a railway line connecting it to the wider world. But Niendorf never forgot its roots. The harbor, artificially constructed in the 1920s, became a testament to the village’s enduring connection to the sea. Today, the scent of salty air and fresh fish still lingers in the air. Niendorf stands as a charming blend of old and new, where the echoes of its past harmonize with the laughter of vacationers.
