Once a small farming village. Now, let’s explore Niedersedlitz.
Niedersedlitz is now a district of Dresden. Its history is full of changes. The village was first mentioned in 1350. It was called Sedelicz then. Sedlica means settlement in Old Sorbian.
The Dohna burggraves once owned Niedersedlitz. In 1402, the Margraves of Meißen acquired it. They divided it among feudal lords.
Niedersedlitz suffered greatly in the Thirty Years’ War. It burned down completely. The Battle of Dresden in 1813 also brought hardship.
Industrialization transformed Niedersedlitz. This started in 1848 with the Saxon-Bohemian Railway. A train station was built here. The construction of a freight station followed in 1871. Factories sprang up along the railway line.
Otto Kauffmann’s chemical factory was founded in 1871. The Pick brothers founded a malt factory in 1873. The Sachsenwerk emerged in 1903.
In 1875, Niedersedlitz established its own school. The school building opened in 1876. A new building became necessary in 1888.
The Volunteer Fire Brigade was founded in 1894. Niedersedlitz formed a waterworks association in 1900. This secured the water supply.
The rapid growth led to the desire for a town hall. Gustav Hänichen was the architect. The town hall was inaugurated on July 10, 1902.
Around 1900, more industries settled here. Roads were built under the railway. The railway line was expanded. A new freight station opened in 1906.
Streetcar lines were also introduced in 1906. These went to Kleinzschachwitz and Kreischa. A streetcar connection to Laubegast already existed in 1899.
Residential streets emerged before World War I. These connected the old village and the railway. Housing cooperatives also created new living space. Luga was incorporated into Niedersedlitz in 1922. Niedersedlitz became part of Dresden on July 1, 1950.
The “Sternhäuser” were built in the 1980s. These were apartment blocks. They were demolished between 2005 and 2011. A large residential area was built at Niedersedlitzer Platz between 1996 and 1998.
Today, Niedersedlitz has good transport links. The A17 motorway is nearby. The S-Bahn lines S1 and S2 serve the Niedersedlitz station. Tram line 6 and bus lines 65, 88, and 89 also run here.
Niedersedlitz has changed greatly over the centuries. From a small village to an industrialized district. It is now part of Dresden. It retains its own unique history.
