What secrets whisper from the ancient stones of Niederpleis? Niederpleis a district of Sankt Augustin boasts a history stretching back to the younger Stone Age 3000-2000 BC. This makes it one of the oldest settlements in Sankt Augustin alongside Menden. Imagine life here millennia ago.

Niederpleis nestled in the Siegniederung valley at 65 meters above sea level lies just eight kilometers northeast of Bonn. Its location at the edge of Bonn’s urban sprawl offers a unique blend of rural charm and urban convenience. The Pleisbach stream gracefully flows along Niederpleis’ eastern edge eventually joining the Sieg River.

The name Niederpleis meaning lower Pleis hints at its position along the Pleisbach. The suffix “-pleis” derives from the Indo-Germanic word “Pleu” signifying flowing or river. Niederpleis and Oberpleis appeared together in 9th-century documents of the Bonner Chatular as Pleisa inferior and Pleisa superiore respectively.

For centuries Niederpleis was a pawn in power struggles. Initially part of the Auelgau under the Carolingians it came under the Siegburg Abbey’s jurisdiction in 1071 by decree of Emperor Henry IV. The Niederpleis church previously belonged to St Cassius in Bonn. Two medieval hill forts stand as silent witnesses to Niederpleis’ past. A knight Heinrich von Niederpleis is mentioned as early as 1218.

The arrival of the Broeltalbahn railway at the end of the 19th century spurred economic growth. Lines connected Niederpleis to Oberpleis in 1893 and Siegburg in 1899. Niederpleis became a regional transportation hub. Sadly the railway lines closed in the 1950s and 60s due to competition from road traffic.

Niederpleis was also a significant center for the clay industry. Ruins of the Plato works and a clay pit serve as reminders. The clay pit even provided materials for landfill sealing. Bonn’s designation as the capital in 1949 drastically changed Niederpleis. Population growth and urbanization followed.

Niederpleis became part of Sankt Augustin in 1969. The 1970s saw the construction of Sankt Augustin’s new town center where Niederpleis has a small stake. The imposing Ruigerwohnpark high-rise residential complex also shaped Niederpleis’ skyline. The Siegauen tunnel opened in 2002 further altering the landscape.

Sadly Niederpleis has also known tragedy. A 2009 attempted school shooting at the Albert-Einstein-Gymnasium shocked the community. A tragic 2023 fire claimed the lives of two experienced firefighters while fighting a blaze.

Niederpleis’ story is one of resilience. From its ancient beginnings to its modern challenges it remains a vibrant part of the Sankt Augustin landscape. Its history is visible in the still-standing St Martinus church a testament to centuries of Niederpleis’ enduring spirit. The present-day building complex that replaced the original Niederpleis castle hosts an annual harvest festival a reminder of Niederpleis’ rich heritage.
