Peeking out from the history books, Niederkaufungen has quite a story. This village is part of Kaufungen in the Landkreis Kassel. It sits southeast of Kassel in the Losse valley.

Niederkaufungen was first mentioned in 1019. However, distinguishing between Nieder- and Oberkaufungen, and the monastery in old texts can be tricky. Over time, the name evolved. From “Choufungia” in 1008 to “Nieder-Kaufungen” in 1708.

In 1017, Empress Kunigunde founded a Benedictine monastery in Kaufungen. Two years later, Emperor Heinrich II gifted Niederkaufungen to this monastery. Thus, Niederkaufungen became part of the royal estate.

Niederkaufungen’s location is quite strategic. It is nestled on both sides of the Losse River. The village has a simple layout. Its buildings are spread out. Oberkaufungen is right next door to the east. The Protestant church stands in the old center near the Losse. You will find the Catholic parish church to the south. Modern expansion first went west toward the paper mill. After World War II, growth shifted south of the railway line. The B7 road runs south of the village.

The railway line Waldkappel to Kassel/Wilhelmshöhe opened in 1879. This connected Niederkaufungen to the wider world.

In 1019, Niederkaufungen was a “villa”. By 1320, it was still a “villa”. In 1585, there were 69 households here. By 1782, Niederkaufungen had 102 houses with 503 residents.

Historically, Niederkaufungen belonged to different administrative regions. In 1019, it was in the Hessengau. By 1787, it was part of the Landgraviate of Hesse-Kassel. Today, since 1970, Niederkaufungen is a district within the municipality of Kaufungen.

The monastery in Kaufungen had jurisdiction over Niederkaufungen. In 1297, the Landgraves of Hesse took over rule and high jurisdiction. Landgrave Philipp transferred the Kaufungen and Wetter abbeys to the Hessian knighthood in 1532.

Emperor Heinrich II gifted Niederkaufungen and Oberkaufungen to the Kaufungen monastery in 1019. In 1322, the Germerode monastery exchanged its holdings in Niederkaufungen with the Kaufungen monastery.

The late Gothic hall church dates back to around 1400. It was expanded in 1615. The Catholic Church of St. Franz von Sales was consecrated in 1954. Niederkaufungen was part of Oberkaufungen parish until 1947. The Reformation was introduced around 1533 by Caspar Doner, pastor of Oberkaufungen.

In 1910, Niederkaufungen had a three-class elementary school.

Historically, Niederkaufungen had agriculture, glassworks, and iron ore mines. A mill was mentioned in 1519. The Förstersche Mill was noted around 1600. The Schlag- und Ölmühle operated until around 1900. The Kördelsche Mill was once a manorial mill.

Today, Niederkaufungen continues to evolve. It balances preserving its history with modern development. The village is a living testament to centuries of change.
