Thousands strong Ngapuhi descendants call Auckland home. They are a powerful iwi a tribe with a rich history. During the nationwide lockdown their unity shone brightly. More than a hundred volunteers from Ngapuhi ki Tamaki sprang into action. They delivered vital food and hygiene packs to kaumatuatua elderly members of their iwi. Māhera Maihi a founder of the network explained their swift response. Ngapuhi in Tāmaki Makaurau were vulnerable. They lived outside their traditional boundaries. They lacked mana whenua status in Auckland. Covid-19 cases were high. The iwi needed to care for its kaumatuatua. Ngapuhi ki Tamaki possessed a large iwi database. It helped them locate and monitor their kaumatuatua. The database contained details of where Ngapuhi descendants lived. It also showed their hapū affiliations. Volunteers used the database to provide support. They tracked vaccinations and underlying health conditions. Each kaumatuatua received two calls a week. The support extended beyond practical needs. Whanaungatanga connection and manaakitanga respect were paramount. It was about checking on people offering comfort and understanding. The response exemplified Ngapuhi’s strength. Ngapuhi means the tribe of many leaders. Mobilising this inherent leadership proved incredibly powerful. Their collective action demonstrated resilience. It underscored their ability to thrive even during adversity. The pandemic revealed the solutions Ngapuhi possess when empowered. The network continues to serve its people ensuring their well-being.
