“Gentle lazy winds” whispers the name Ngā Hau Māngere. This isn’t just a bridge. It’s a lifeline a connection spanning centuries. Ngā Hau Māngere is the newest bridge across the Māngere Inlet. It replaced an older bridge closed in 2018. This new structure however is more than just concrete and steel. It is a testament to the enduring spirit of the Māngere and Onehunga communities. The area has been inhabited for centuries by Tāmaki Māori. They farmed the land using ancient Polynesian techniques. Māngere Mountain a volcanic cone was once home to a fortified pā. The Ngā Hau Māngere’s design reflects this rich history. Mana whenua Te Waiohua gifted the name Ngā Hau Māngere. It means “gentle lazy winds” reflecting the area’s unique character.

The project started in 2020. The $38 million project was completed in 2022. The construction faced delays due to the Covid-19 lockdowns. Yet the community’s strong desire for a new pedestrian and cycle bridge prevailed. The Ngā Hau Māngere design includes special features. There are fishing bays with rod holders. Various bench styles cater to families groups and individuals. The bridge maximizes views of the harbour and surrounding landscapes. Safe handrails prevent rubbish from entering the harbour. There is even a rain garden that filters stormwater before it reaches the sea.

The bridge’s opening was a significant event. There was an official ceremony. However an unofficial opening followed on Father’s Day. Locals shared stories of the old bridge. They recounted its history and the important role it played in their lives. The old bridge had many cherished memories for families and friends. Parts of it are preserved in a heritage garden. Unused materials were repurposed. The local pony club received timber for fencing and jumps.

Ngā Hau Māngere is more than just a way to cross the inlet. It’s a symbol of community resilience. It’s a space for gathering and reflection. It’s a bridge between past present and future. The design acknowledges its place in history. The bridge stands as a testament to the enduring spirit of the Māngere community and their connection to the land and sea. It is a worthy successor to the bridges that came before. A new symbol of pride for the communities it connects. A place where gentle lazy winds indeed caress the faces of those who cross.
