Imagine nutmeg plantations blanketing this very area back in the 1800s. Now, we’re standing in Newton. It is a planning area in Singapore’s Central Region. Newton isn’t buzzing like Orchard Road nearby. But it has its own story to tell.

Let’s dive into Newton’s past. Originally, Newton Road was called Syed Ali Road. In 1914, it was renamed after Alfred Howard Vincent Newton. He was an assistant municipal engineer. The name change avoided confusion with Syed Alwi Road.

Newton Circus is a key feature here. It was built in 1933. This 40-foot-wide circular carriageway managed traffic. Eight roads converge here. Locals sometimes call Newton Circus “ethumuchandi.” That means “eight-junction place” in Tamil.

Newton’s history includes a railway. The Malayan Railway once ran through here. It opened in 1903. The route went from Tank Road. It passed Orchard Road and Newton Circus. It ended in Kranji. The railway lines were removed in the 1930s. This made way for new roads.

Traffic lights came to Newton Circus in 1987. They worked only during peak hours initially. This helped with traffic congestion. Since 2011, these lights operate 24 hours. They manage the constant traffic flow.

Are you feeling hungry? Newton Food Centre is right beside Newton Circus. It opened in 1971. It accommodated hawkers from Cuppage and Koek roads. It is a popular spot for locals and tourists. The food center was renovated in 2016.

Newton is more than just a transport hub. It is a residential area too. It has exclusive old houses and high-rise buildings. Newton is conveniently located. It is near Orchard Road. It also has MRT lines. This makes it easy to get around Singapore. Newton offers a blend of history and modern convenience. Its story reflects Singapore’s growth and transformation. Newton is a reminder of Singapore’s past. It is also a vibrant part of its present.
