In 1885 a grand gesture echoed through the streets of Newport. Hugh Ross, a prominent local figure, declared that if the Newport Baptist Church purchased land on Newcastle Street, he would donate an adjacent plot. This generous offer spurred the church into action. A beautiful building, 48 feet by 28 feet, designed by the talented J.F. Gibbons, soon rose on the site. It could accommodate 250 worshippers. This marked the beginning of the Newport Baptist Church’s journey. The church thrived, but as the years passed, it became clear that a new home was needed. In 1913, the church building embarked on a physical journey of its own. It was carefully moved from its original location on Newcastle Street to its current location on Mason Street. The cornerstone of a new, even grander church was laid in the same year. This new edifice, the one you see before you today, was completed and opened with much celebration in 1935. The joyous occasion was marked with the theme “Come and Rejoice with Us”. The Newport Baptist Church has always been a beacon of faith and community spirit.
