Seven and a half kilometres southwest of Melbourne’s bustling CBD lies Newport. A place steeped in history and buzzing with modern life. Newport’s story isn’t just about bricks and mortar. It’s about people. It’s about the Yalukit-willam people the traditional owners whose connection to this land stretches back over 30000 years. Their presence predates European settlement by millennia. Their story is woven into the very fabric of Newport’s existence.

Early European contact was far from peaceful. Sealers arrived between 1803 and 1834. Their arrival brought violence. Things changed slightly in 1835. John Batman arrived and a treaty was established. A period of relative peace followed. Yet the Aboriginal people still faced hardship. They were increasingly denied access to their ancestral lands.

Newport’s development began around 1862. It was then called Williamstown Junction. A Telegraph Office and Post Office were established by 1869. The name changed to Newport in 1881. The Newport Railway Workshops were pivotal. They were the main workshops for Victorian Railways. They are just south of Newport railway station. The suburb also boasts the Newport Power Station. Its chimney remains one of the tallest towers in Melbourne at 183 metres. Initially coal-fired its generators were replaced in 1981. Today a single gas-fired generator powers the station during peak times.

Newport today is a vibrant tapestry. It’s a place of diverse ethnicities and socio-economic backgrounds. The suburb contains a Mosque a Baptist church and Catholic schools. There are tattoo parlours Asian and Italian restaurants and thriving sports clubs. You’ll also find boutique wine bars and an RSL. Newport boasts twelve playgrounds within a mere 5 square kilometres. The Substation a community arts centre in a restored 1915 building is a hub for local artists and performers. The Newport Railway Museum which is open on weekends contains locomotives and carriages built in the area.

The Newport Folk Festival takes place annually in June. The area’s natural beauty is undeniable. Newport Lakes Greenwich Bay and the Sandy Point Conservation area offer beautiful locations. People enjoy fishing cycling and watersports here. Newport Lakes Park a bushland oasis was created from a former bluestone quarry. It now boasts over 200 plant species and 85 bird species.

The story of Newport is one of transformation. It’s a journey from a working-class industrial suburb to a diverse and vibrant community. It’s a place where history meets modernity where the past informs the present and the future is being shaped by the community’s dynamic energy. Newport is more than just a suburb; it’s a living testament to resilience creativity and a strong sense of community.
