Did you know Newmarket Auckland boasts a rich history stretching back to the 1840s? Right here before us stands a place once known as Te Ti Tutahi the cabbage tree of singular importance. This area held deep significance for the Tu0101maki Mu0101ori. A lone cabbage tree marked the spot where Mortimer Pass and Broadway meet. It stood until 1908 a landmark until deemed a danger to nearby schoolchildren.

Newmarket Auckland wasn’t always the bustling retail hub we see today. It began as a livestock market a New Market hence the name. Farmers drove their stock along major roads like Manukau Road now Parnell Road to this central location. The arrival of the Newmarket railway station in 1873 further solidified its position as a transport hub. This connection to Auckland City made it a key gateway to the south.

The main street Broadway was once Manukau Road. A muddy dusty street it was renamed in 1912 reflecting its transformation. The area’s character shifted dramatically. From a transport hub it evolved into a retail haven. This transformation is evident in the presence of Broadway Cinema opened in 1911. This cinema lasted until 1925 a testament to the area’s evolving entertainment scene.

Newmarket Auckland’s modern image is shaped by its past. The Olympic Swimming Pool built in 1939 is a stunning Art Deco structure. It hosted numerous sporting events including the Empire Games in 1950. Today a cinema complex covers what was once an open-air pool. Nearby Lumsden Green a park named after the last mayor before amalgamation with Auckland City in 1989 stands as a testament to Newmarket’s history.

The Newmarket Viaduct built in 1966 is another landmark. It carried the Southern Motorway above railway lines and streets. This development spurred the shift away from industry towards retail. However the area still holds some industrial roots. Several breweries have operated here since the 1840s. The area’s water from Mount Eden springs provided excellent filtered water.

Today Newmarket Auckland is a major retail and hospitality destination. It’s a blend of old and new. Historic buildings stand alongside modern high-rises. The Westfield Centre is a prominent example of this blend. It underwent major redevelopment and expansion between 2017 and 2020. This constant evolution of Newmarket Auckland makes it a fascinating place to explore. Its history is written into its streets and its buildings a history that continues to shape its vibrant present.
