“A school built by the community, for the community.” That’s the essence of Newhaven College. Right here on Phillip Island Road, stands a testament to the vision and dedication of local families. Newhaven College first opened its doors in 1980 at the Boys Home Road Campus. The school’s journey began in the late 1970s with a simple idea. Community members, including solicitor Peter Reith, recognized the need for a high-quality, local school. This shared dream sparked a fire, leading to the first public meeting in 1977. Over 350 people attended, fueled by the desire for a better educational future for their children. This collective effort transformed an idea into a reality. Newhaven College started as a humble institution with just 51 students in Years 7 and 8. One administration building and portable classrooms marked the beginning of their educational journey. In 1989, the College saw significant progress with the completion of a Year 11 and 12 complex. New classrooms and a laboratory were soon underway. The Junior School opened its doors in 1999. A composite class of 25 students in Years 5 and 6 marked the school’s growth. By 2000, the student population reached 400, with 40 dedicated teachers nurturing young minds. A significant step occurred in 2004 with the purchase of land on Phillip Island Road. This paved the way for the opening of the Year 9 Environmental Centre the following year. This was the first of many state-of-the-art facilities on the new campus. The Junior and Middle Schools followed suit, along with specialized centers for Trades Skills and Food Technology. Then the Senior School, Art facilities, Science labs, and a Technology wing were added over the next 12 years. In a historic moment in 2018, the entire school community came together on the Phillip Island Road campus. This marked a full circle moment. The very first Prep class at Newhaven College graduated as Year 12s that same year. Today, Newhaven College stands as a thriving educational hub. Over 900 students from Prep to Year 12 benefit from the College’s diverse academic and co-curricular opportunities. The school provides a holistic education, emphasizing intellectual, emotional, and spiritual growth. Newhaven College is a member of Ecumenical Schools Australia and the South Eastern Independent Schools Association. This offers students broader learning opportunities and a chance to connect with other schools in the region. From humble beginnings fueled by community spirit, Newhaven College has blossomed into a vibrant educational institution, a testament to the power of shared dreams and collective action. It’s a place where students not only gain knowledge but also develop the confidence and sense of purpose to navigate their world.
