Hidden within Easthouses, Midlothian, lies Newbattle High School. It’s more than just bricks and mortar. It’s a hub of activity and ambition, nestled within the vibrant Newbattle Community Campus. Newbattle High School isn’t a new kid on the block. Established in 1969, the school has a rich history, serving the communities of Mayfield, Easthouses, and Newtongrange. After Greenhall High School closed in 1994, Newbattle extended its reach to include Gorebridge, Temple, Borthwick, and North Middleton. The school’s motto, “Challenge,” reflects its commitment to pushing students to achieve their full potential. This drive is further reinforced by the hashtag #AIMHIGHER, a constant reminder of the school’s ambitious goals. Newbattle High School moved into its current, modern home in June 2018. The campus is a three-story teaching block, a two-story sports facility, and a connecting entrance block housing a library and cafĂ©. The design was heavily influenced by the Lasswade Centre, and can accommodate up to 1200 students. Newbattle High School also boasts specialized facilities for vocational education, including the Carnethy Suite (a hospitality suite), a hairdressing salon, and a recording studio. In 2018, the school was designated a Digital Centre for Excellence. This reflects its forward-thinking approach to education. It provides students with the digital skills they need to thrive in the modern world. The school isn’t just focused on academics. It also emphasizes pupil leadership and self-esteem. This holistic approach to education ensures that students develop into well-rounded individuals. Newbattle High School even has a house system. Students are divided into four houses: Pentland (Red), Moorfoot (Purple), Lammermuir (Yellow), and Borthwick (Green). Each house has its own guidance and support staff, fostering a sense of community and belonging. The school has nurtured some remarkable individuals. Former pupils include Adam Nelson and Alex Notman, both footballers, Ashleigh Gray, a West End musical performer, and Grant Murray, another footballer and former manager of Raith Rovers. Even the staff at Newbattle High School are noteworthy. John Frame, a history teacher, has umpired seven Wimbledon finals, including three men’s singles finals. Donald Wilson, a former computing teacher, served as Lord Provost of Edinburgh from 2012 to 2017. Newbattle High School is more than a school. It’s a community, a place of growth, and a launchpad for future success.
