Centuries of history reside within these stones. I’m here to share some of Newbattle Abbey’s story. Newbattle Abbey, originally a medieval Cistercian monastery, boasts 900 years of Scottish history. Today, it serves as both an events venue and a college.
King David I founded Newbattle Abbey in 1140. The Cistercians were quite influential in Europe. They were also great entrepreneurs. The Abbey significantly boosted the local economy. Coal mining, sheep farming, salt production and cart making all provided employment.
Newbattle Abbey played a key political role in Scotland. Robert Bruce visited here often. A council of nobles gathered here in spring 1320. They drafted a letter to the Pope. They requested recognition of Scotland’s independence and Bruce as the lawful king. This letter became known as the Declaration of Arbroath. Its economic and political importance made Newbattle Abbey a target. It faced near destruction in the 16th century. Many brothers abandoned the abbey.
Newbattle Abbey has welcomed royalty and privileged guests for centuries. It sits a short distance from Edinburgh city center. The abbey offers 125 acres of peaceful parkland on the River Esk. This unique building is perfect for various events. These range from meetings and conferences to weddings.
The Drawing Room showcases Edinburgh architect Thomas Bonnar’s work. Its ornate fresco ceiling is breathtaking. The Mezzanine, filled with original artworks, sets an inspiring mood. It is ideal for drinks receptions.
Scotland’s future took shape at Newbattle Abbey. It was here that the Declaration of Arbroath was drafted. Each room holds a story. The Chapel’s font is believed to have been used to baptize Mary Queen of Scots. There’s even a secret staircase and a vaulted Crypt. Private guided tours can be arranged.
The estate grounds provide space for team building activities. Newbattle Abbey even served as a film location. The army requisitioned Newbattle during World War 2. It reopened as a college in 1950.
