New Shiloh Baptist Church launched its Saturday Church School in October 1973. The church embarked upon its new work with excitement. Pastor Carter reminded the current teachers of the genesis of this unique educational ministry. He noted the influence of the civil rights movement. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. charged everyone to reach out. He urged them to uplift their brothers and sisters with their God-given talents. The message was laden with self-help. It also included spiritual independence. The church community strove to live and operate from a position of increasing strength.

Faith in God was central to this effort. Knowledge of Christian faith’s principles was also key. Dr. Carter knew it was essential to teach people the Word of God. This included scripture memorization. It also meant developing familiarity with psalms and gospels. Pastor Carter noted the power of God’s Word. He said we need to teach the Bible now more than ever.

Since the initial classes, the Bible has been the standard textbook at New Shiloh Baptist Church. God’s Word shared in Christian love yields powerful results. Individual lives transform. Families and entire communities are transformed. The Fall 1973 session opened with devotional worship. This was followed by an in-depth Bible lesson. Then came elective enrichment classes. These included reading and arithmetic skills. They also offered creative English, crafts and Black history. Other classes included typing, music and home economics. Students could learn library skills, Bible study and discipleship. New Shiloh charged Rev. Brenda Greene with developing a relevant Bible curriculum. This curriculum would meet the needs of students. It would foster their spiritual growth.

These initial steps of faith provided an enduring model. As a living ministry, the Saturday Church School has developed other classes. It has also created ministries to serve its students. These include a performing arts academy and a dance ministry. There is also a bus ministry. The New Shiloh Baptist Church even has a Saturday Church School choir.

Additionally, there have been classes in Old and New Testament studies. The church offers rites of passage for young misses. There’s a boys club for young men. Computer classes and sewing classes are available. Storytelling is taught. Finally, there is a new members’ class. Recent converts are introduced to the faith. They are nurtured in an eight-week course of study.
