Water shortages? Not anymore! Here we are at the New River Head Windmill. It played a crucial role in London’s water supply. This ingenious structure helped provide clean water to a rapidly growing city centuries ago.
The New River Head Windmill stands as a testament to early engineering ingenuity. London’s population boomed between 1550 and 1600. The population increased from 50,000 to 220,000. This growth strained existing water sources. Rivers and wells became polluted. Access to clean water turned into a serious problem.
Enterprising individuals sought solutions. Edmund Colthurst proposed the New River. It would bring water from Hertfordshire springs to London. However, Colthurst ran into financial difficulties. Hugh Myddelton, a wealthy goldsmith, stepped in. He secured financial backing and political support to complete the project. Most of the founding shareholders bought into the New River Company with money made from lending, piracy and overseas trade.
Completed in 1613, the New River was a marvel. The channel stretched over 40 miles. Gravity ensured a continuous water flow. New River Head became the river’s London terminus. The site was chosen for its elevated position and clay soil. This allowed for water storage and distribution.
The New River Company charged residents for piped water connections. While wealthy households quickly signed up. Others protested the idea of paying for such a vital resource. The business eventually thrived. By 1700, it ranked among London’s wealthiest companies.
Initially, New River Head consisted of a pond and the Water House. A system of stopcocks controlled the water flow. As London expanded westward more pressure was needed.
The New River Head Windmill was built between 1707 and 1708. The windmill was constructed to pump water from the Round Pond to the new Upper Pond. However, the windmill was not successful. It proved inadequate. Wind power was unreliable. The windmill was initially reinforced with an integral horse gin. By 1768, it was superseded entirely by a steam engine. A steam engine replaced it in 1768. The sails of the windmill were removed in the 1770s. It was truncated to two storeys and converted into a store.
Later, the Engine House was adapted three times during its working life, powering the site until 1950. The site closed in 1957.
Filter beds were added in 1854 to improve water quality. Sandwashing, an ancient technique, purified the water. It passed through layers of sand and gravel.
In 1904, the city’s water companies were taken into public ownership. The New River Company ceased its original role.
Today, the Quentin Blake Centre for Illustration occupies the site. Restoration efforts aim to preserve its industrial heritage. The windmill base will become a space for community illustrators and artists.
