Was New Mount Olive Baptist Church always this grand? That’s a question you might ask yourself standing before its impressive façade. And the answer, my friends, is a resounding no! New Mount Olive Baptist Church had a very humble beginning, all the way back on November 25, 1918. This wasn’t the grand structure you see before you. Imagine a small, wooden building erected in 1925 at the corner of Fourth Street and Ninth Avenue. This was the vision of Reverend H.P. Bragdon and a determined woman named Sister Mary Liza Williams. They saw potential in this corner, a place where faith could blossom. And blossom it did! Despite facing two devastating hurricanes in 1926 and 1928, the congregation persevered, rebuilding their beloved church not once, but twice! Each time, they rose from the ashes, their faith stronger than ever. By 1930, they had a completed church and a membership exceeding 500. New Mount Olive Baptist Church wasn’t just a building, it was a testament to the unyielding spirit of its people!
