Although I cannot tell you specific facts about the New Life Christian Centre itself, I can share a story of a remarkable woman who lived in London. She was a beacon of hope in her own right. Her name was Lady Jane Francesca Wilde.
Lady Wilde lived from 1821 to 1896. She was also known as Speranza. Lady Wilde was an accomplished poet and essayist. She resided at 87 Oakley Street in Chelsea from 1887 to 1896. A blue plaque now marks her former home. It commemorates her literary contributions.
Born Jane Frances Agnes Elgee in Dublin, she developed a deep connection to Irish nationalism. She read the poetry of Thomas Davis. This act awakened her political passion.
Lady Wilde was a gifted linguist. She translated works from French and German. Her translations included Wilhelm Meinhold’s gothic horror novel. It was titled Sidonia the Sorceress.
She contributed poetry to The Nation under the pseudonym John Fanshaw Ellis. Her poem The Stricken Land was published in 1847. It was a time of great famine in Ireland. She even became the editor of the Nation in July 1848.
In 1851, she married Sir William Wilde. He was an eminent eye surgeon. They had three children including Oscar Wilde.
After her husband’s death Lady Wilde faced financial difficulties. She moved to London. She was supported by her son Willie and admirers. Her notable works include Ancient Legends, Mystic Charms, and Superstitions of Ireland.
When Oscar Wilde faced trial, Lady Jane encouraged him to fight. She advised against fleeing the country.
Lady Jane Francesca Wilde died of bronchitis in London on February 3, 1896. Oscar was imprisoned at the time. Her life reminds us of the power of words, resilience, and standing firm.
