Here stands New Jerusalem Pentecostal Church. It is more than just a building. It is a testament to faith and perseverance.
New Jerusalem Pentecostal Church has a rich history. Its roots trace back to the vision of Bishop Stephen N and Mother Diana Frazier. They founded The Pentecostal Church of Christ in April 1944.
The Pentecostal Church of Christ started humbly. Services began in a tent in Hardeeville South Carolina. The tent moved to Robert Street in Savannah within a year. Tragedy struck in 1946 when a fire destroyed the tent.
Despite this setback the vision endured. In 1955 the organization became chartered. This gave Bishop Frazier the power to ordain ministers.
The Bishop and Mother Frazier prayed and fasted. God provided them funds to purchase a small wooden building. It stood on the corner of West Boundary and Gwinnett Street.
In 1959 the government bought the surrounding land. They planned to build the Kayton Home Housing Community. With the buyout money the church bought two lots on Porter Street. There they built their first sanctuary. This became New Jerusalem Pentecostal Church of Christ Inc.
New Jerusalem is now the mother church. It serves for the entire Pentecostal Church of Christ organization.
Over the years many people experienced spiritual awakenings here. People were filled with the Holy Ghost. They spoke in tongues. Many received blessings and healings at New Jerusalem Pentecostal Church.
Mother Diana Frazier passed away in March 1991. Bishop Frazier followed in June 2003.
Apostle Dublin Johnson Jr became the Presiding Prelate in November 2003. He continued to grow the church. Leaders and members worked together to promote their faith.
Pastor David and Elect Lady Elease Johnson Jr now lead New Jerusalem Pentecostal Church of Christ Inc. They continue the work on Porter Street. Minister Zackary and Na’Shonda Folks serve as youth pastors. Deacon Mark R Beamon Sr is the Chief Financial Officer.
