How many churches can claim to be the very first of their kind in a city? Right here, in the heart of Dallas, stands New Hope Church. This isn’t just any church. New Hope Church proudly holds the title of the first Black church in Dallas, entirely established and owned by the Black community. Its story began in 1873, not within these grand walls, but in the humble log cabin of Sister Mattie Rainey. Picture a small group of seven devout Christians, gathered in prayer. Their faith, ignited in the face of immense challenges, fueled their desire for a dedicated space of worship. They reached out to the American Baptist Home Mission Society, and soon their prayers were answered with the arrival of Reverend John Hay. He helped formally establish New Hope Church, marking a historic moment for Dallas. But New Hope Church, even in its infancy, was more than just a place of worship. It quickly evolved into a beacon of hope and progress for the Black community in a time when such support was desperately needed. New Hope Church wasn’t just built on faith, but on action. From those humble beginnings, New Hope Church blossomed into the institution we see today. This church is a testament to the enduring spirit of faith and the power of community.
