Pastor Sams’ unwavering faith. That’s what built this church. The New Evangelical Bible Church stands before you a testament to perseverance. It began humbly in 1965. A small Bible study group met in the basement of a home on South Kostner. About ten to fifteen people from diverse religious backgrounds. Rev J H Konelson a teacher from Wheaton Illinois led the classes. Young Willie J Sams chaired those early meetings.
In 1967 Sams felt the call to preach. He delivered his first sermon from Romans 1:16. A powerful verse about the Gospel’s transformative power. The following year he was ordained and founded the New Evangelical Bible Church. It remained in that basement for two years. Then in March 1970 a new chapter unfolded. The church relocated to 4636 West Washington Boulevard. A simple sign proclaimed its presence. Pastor Sams’ leadership attracted many people. The church grew. Soon more space was needed.
With Pastor Sams himself acting as contractor they built a new sanctuary and classrooms. It was a labor of love. Congregation members worked alongside their pastor. In 2000 a momentous occasion arrived. They burned the mortgage. A symbol of freedom and a springboard for a new vision. A community and outreach center. A place to prepare people for service. The plans were drawn up and approved. The vision took shape.
Today the New Evangelical Bible Church remains at 4636 West Washington Boulevard. Pastor Sams still leads the congregation. He continues to spread the Gospel. His simple yet profound belief resonates. Everybody needs to know Jesus. This building isn’t just brick and mortar. It’s a living legacy. A story of faith determination and community. A story that continues to unfold.
