It has served as a beacon of hope and support for countless individuals. The church, located at 755 South Homer Street, became a spiritual home under the leadership of Reverend Matthew Jerome Thornton. He served as pastor for an impressive 49 years, from 1994 until his passing in 2023. Reverend Thornton was known for his eloquent prayers, insightful biblical teachings, and powerful preaching. His influence extended beyond Seattle, reaching across the Pacific Northwest and even to other states where he often led revivals. He was a beloved figure, known for his kindness, gentle heart, and warm smile. Reverend Thornton’s philosophy resonated deeply within the New Direction Missionary Church community. He envisioned it as “a church small enough to care but big enough to do something about it.” He embodied this principle, leading by example and demonstrating compassionate love and service to those in need. In April 2010, the church hosted a poignant Good Friday service centered around the “Seven Last Sayings of Christ from the Cross.” Associate preachers from various churches, including Reverend Dr. Steve Elliott, Sr. from New Direction, joined together for this significant event. This collaborative spirit reflects the interconnectedness of the faith community in Seattle. Reverend Thornton’s legacy continues to inspire the congregation of New Direction Missionary Church. His dedication to serving others and his unwavering faith shaped the church’s identity and continue to guide its mission.
