Let’s step back in time. Before this depot, there was a smaller New Cross Depot. It served the old London Underground line. That older depot handled light maintenance. Heavier work went to Neasden Depot. The old New Cross Depot closed. It was demolished when the line moved from London Underground.
Now, picture this: 2009. Construction is buzzing here. This current New Cross Gate Depot rises. Its job? To stable British Rail Class 378 stock. These trains would run on the new London Overground service. This new depot differed from its predecessor. It was built north of New Cross Gate. It was strategically placed next to the Brighton Main Line.
Fast forward to 2014. Demand is growing. The Class 378 units get longer. They expanded from four to five cars. New Cross Gate Depot had to grow too. It was extended by 20 metres. That’s about 66 feet to accommodate the longer trains.
Today, New Cross Gate Depot is home to London Overground Class 378 EMUs. It is more than just a parking spot for trains. It’s a place where maintenance happens.
