Can a church be more than just a building? At New Covenant Presbyterian Church in South San Francisco, the answer is a resounding yes. This church isn’t just a structure. It’s a living testament to faith, perseverance, and a deep commitment to community. New Covenant Presbyterian Church traces its roots back to the 1950s, as a mission work of First OPC in San Francisco. Pastor Edwards Elliott of First OPC worked tirelessly to establish this new congregation. The first service was held on September 26, 1954, with a modest gathering of fifteen souls in a rented storefront near the current location. Imagine those early days, filled with hope and a shared vision for a thriving spiritual home. A few years later, on September 25, 1957, this small group officially became Brentwood Orthodox Presbyterian Church. In 1958, they welcomed their first pastor, Arthur Riffel, who served until 1962. A period of transition followed, with Edwin Urban, a missionary on furlough from Taiwan, leading the congregation from 1963 to 1965. The story of New Covenant Presbyterian Church is deeply intertwined with the ministry of Carl Erickson. A graduate of Westminster Theological Seminary, Pastor Erickson arrived in 1967 and served faithfully for fifty years. His unwavering commitment shaped the church’s identity, grounding its members in the Reformed faith and the power of God’s Word. Fifty years. A lifetime of dedication to this congregation. New Covenant Presbyterian Church is part of the Orthodox Presbyterian Church denomination, a testament to its commitment to the Westminster Standards and the rich tradition of the Reformation. The church’s commitment to expository preaching shines through, with the current pastor, Michael Grasso, carrying on this legacy. Grasso, a graduate of Greenville Presbyterian Theological Seminary, was called to New Covenant OPC in 2019. He leads the congregation with a focus on communicating the timeless truths of Scripture and applying them to the challenges of modern life. New Covenant Presbyterian Church stands as a beacon of faith. It’s a place where the Word of God is central, where community thrives, and where the echoes of dedicated pastors resonate through the years.
