For one hundred years God has been nurturing seeds at New Bethel Baptist Church. This isn’t just any church. New Bethel has deep roots. It’s a story etched in time. A testament to faith resilience and community.
Originally located at 215 Ann Street New Bethel was the oldest church in Austin’s Second Ward. It began its journey long ago. It served as a beacon of hope and worship for generations. The church faced many challenges. It persevered through relocation and rebuilding.
Rev LV Adams pastored New Bethel in 1958. Under his leadership membership grew. Auxiliary groups formed. Building projects were launched. Rev JW Grace followed. He served for 22 years. Deacon Palmer Deacon Hoy Lewis and Johnnie B Tucker were key figures during this time. A.E Boone S E Barr Phillip Lewis Martin Donald Sr and C Clemons served as trustees. Sis D Parker was the secretary.
After Rev Grace’s passing in 1984 New Bethel faced another hurdle. It relocated. Services were held in various places. Rev Mark Jones served as pastor for three years. Unfortunately no records from this period exist.
Through unwavering faith a new church was built in Kashmere Gardens. Its current location is 3535 Brewster Street. The congregation moved there in December 1985. They’ve remained there ever since. Caleb B Anderson became pastor in 1987. His wife Vanessa and their children Joshua and Amber joined him in serving the church. Pastor Anderson has led New Bethel for over 30 years.
New Bethel Baptist Church is more than just a building. It is a living testament to faith perseverance and the enduring power of community.
