New Archetypes Sculpture

Amidst the vibrant energy of Seattle’s waterfront, let’s pause at the New Archetypes Sculpture. This striking artwork isn’t just a visual feast. It’s a powerful narrative woven into the very fabric of this place. The New Archetypes, envisioned by artist Oscar Tuazon, stretches across three city blocks. It spans from Columbia Street to Spring Street, gracing the waterfront bike path. The sculpture consists of 22 pairs of Douglas fir post-and-beam structures and six individual posts. These rise from the planting beds, creating a rhythmic procession that draws the eye along the waterfront. Tuazon collaborated with the Suquamish and Muckleshoot Indian Tribes to honor the Salish tradition of carved house posts. This collaboration brought to life the vision of Indigenous futures on the Salish Sea. The fir, sourced locally and milled on the Olympic Peninsula, speaks to the region’s deep connection with its natural surroundings. The wood has been treated to withstand the marine environment. Adorning the west-facing beams are two cedar carvings. Randi Purser’s carving depicts Chief Sealth as an infant, cradled in his mother’s arms. This piece connects to another carving on Bainbridge Island, showcasing Chief Sealth’s father. Tyson Simmons and Keith Stevenson’s carving honors a warrior. It stands as a symbol of strength and honor for the people. The New Archetypes Sculpture offers more than just artistic beauty. It serves as a constant reminder of the Indigenous peoples who have shaped this land since time immemorial. Their cultures are integral to the waterfront’s story, and this artwork ensures their presence is felt and honored.
