Founded on February 22 1952 New Antioch Baptist Church initially bore a different name. It was called New Pilgrim Baptist Church. Thirteen dedicated members and Reverend James Z Williams spearheaded its creation. Deaconess Ruth Tanner later bestowed its current name. The church’s journey began at Ann and Jefferson Streets. Rapid growth necessitated a move to 1022 Harford Avenue.
In 1957 Reverend Nathan Fulton assumed the pastorate. Membership soared. A missionary program expanded its reach. The church joined the United Baptist Missionary Convention of Maryland. Another relocation followed to Eden and Hoffman Streets in October 1959. Tragedy struck in June 1961. A devastating fire gutted the church building. Members sought refuge at Second Baptist Church.
Reverend Julius Price pastor there offered solace. By November 1961 the renovated church reopened. Membership continued to grow under Reverend W S Chambers who served as acting pastor. The church flourished. It purchased an Educational Center. On December 15 1988 Reverend Orlando A Wilson was voted in as pastor. His installation spanned a week culminating on May 28 1989.
Under Reverend Wilson’s leadership New Antioch Baptist Church experienced a transformative period. He fostered new vision for the church and the community. The church relocated to its current location 2401 Saint Paul Street in November 1992. This move stands as a testament to the church’s enduring faith and resilience. New Antioch Baptist Church continues to serve its community as a beacon of hope. Its history resonates with the spirit of its founders and the countless lives it has touched.
