Founded in 1880 Nevada Texas boasts a rich history. It began as McMinn Chapel a small settlement. Granville Stinebaugh renamed it Nevada. He named it after the Nevada Territory. He’d passed through it on his way to California. He was searching for gold. The town thrived. It became a stop on the St Louis Southwestern Railway. This brought prosperity. Life wasn’t always easy though. A devastating F4 tornado hit Nevada in 1927. Nineteen people died. A hundred were injured. Property damage exceeded $650000. The town struggled to recover. Citizens even voted to unincorporate. The Great Depression and agricultural mechanization added to the hardship. The railroad eventually left. In recent years Nevada has experienced a resurgence. Collin County’s growth has helped. The population is now back to its 1927 levels. Nevada today stands as a testament to resilience. It overcame hardship and continues to grow.
