How many cities can boast a work of art so grand it vanished beneath the earth? Neuperlach can. This sprawling suburb, southeast of Munich’s heart, holds more than meets the eye. From its humble beginnings as a planned “relief city” in the 1960s, Neuperlach rose from the former Perlacher Haid to become a testament to Germany’s postwar architectural ambitions. Today, it’s one of Germany’s largest satellite towns, intertwining vast housing estates with pockets of unexpected beauty.

In 1969, the American artist Michael Heizer chose a vacant plot in Neuperlach for a monumental artwork called “Munich Depression.” Imagine a crater, four meters deep and thirty-five meters wide, carved into the earth itself. Visitors could descend into this void, the surrounding buildings disappearing from view until only the sky remained. This stark juxtaposition of urban development and artistic intervention was short-lived. The site was soon built upon, leaving “Munich Depression” to exist only through photographs and memories.

Despite its planned origins, Neuperlach has a vibrant, ever-evolving identity. It’s home to over 55,000 residents, buzzing shopping malls, and green spaces that snake through the concrete landscape. From the echoes of Heizer’s earthwork to the modern architectural marvels that define its skyline, Neuperlach stands as a reminder that even the grandest plans can be altered, leaving unexpected impressions on the landscape and in our minds.
