The Neuffer-Bau stands here as a testament to Friedrich Wilhelm Neuffer. He was a distinguished civil engineer and scientist. This building bears his name in honor of his contributions.
Friedrich Wilhelm Neuffer was born in Stuttgart in 1882. He died in Dresden in 1960. He left an indelible mark on the field of civil engineering.
Neuffer’s career began after studying civil engineering at the Technical University of Stuttgart. He worked on many construction projects. These included the Hohenzollern Bridge in Cologne and the Berlin S-Bahn. He became a professor at the Technische Hochschule Dresden in 1931. There he taught and researched solid construction, timber construction and foundation engineering.
In 1939, Neuffer became head of the Department of Solid Construction and Foundation Engineering. He also worked at the TH Dresden’s Institute for Earthworks. He was responsible for foundation engineering issues there. He became director of the Institute for Earthworks in 1945. Even after his retirement in 1951, he remained head of the Institute for Foundation Engineering and Soil Mechanics. He held this position until the summer of 1960.
The Technische Hochschule Braunschweig awarded him an honorary doctorate in engineering in 1956. This was “in recognition of his successful efforts to develop new forms of solid bridges and to promote and further develop soil mechanics”.
The TU Dresden honored Neuffer in 1982. It renamed the Institute for Geotechnics building as the Neuffer-Bau.
The Neuffer-Bau has a new main entrance. It is due to construction work on the Beyer Building. The entrance is now in the Neuffer-Bau annex. You can reach it from the lecture hall center.
You can reach the Neuffer-Bau by tram or bus from Dresden Central Station. Take tram line 3 or 8 to Nürnberger Platz. Or take bus line 66 to Technische Universität. The bus stop is right in front of the Neuffer-Bau.
The Neuffer-Bau continues to be a place of learning and research. It stands as a reminder of Neuffer’s legacy. It inspires future generations of engineers and scientists.
