Towering above us, the Neuf lignes obliques sculpture presents an imposing sight. This steel monument stands proudly on the Promenade des Anglais. It marks a significant moment in Nice’s history.
The Neuf lignes obliques was created by French artist Bernar Venet. Venet is known for his monumental steel sculptures. The Neuf lignes obliques commemorates the 150th anniversary of the annexation of the County of Nice by France in 1860.
Christian Estrosi, the Mayor of Nice, commissioned the sculpture. He wanted it to symbolize the nine valleys of the old County of Nice. He also envisioned the sculpture as representing the surrounding mountains pointing towards the sea.
The Neuf lignes obliques comprises nine steel beams. Each beam is 30 meters long. They converge at their top, creating a striking visual effect. The beams are inclined at an oblique angle as the name suggests.
Constructed from 75 tons of corten steel, the Neuf lignes obliques rests on a 130-ton concrete foundation. It is the tallest and heaviest artwork intended for public space in France. Its sheer size commands attention.
Initially, some residents were hesitant about the project. They worried it would disrupt the Promenade des Anglais. But the Neuf lignes obliques has become a landmark. It is a gathering place and a source of pride for the people of Nice.
The city paid only for the manufacture and installation of the Neuf lignes obliques. This was a small cost compared to the sculpture’s estimated value of 2 million euros. Venet gifted the artwork to the city.
The Neuf lignes obliques stands between the George Pompidou esplanade and the Promenade des Anglais. This location connects Vieux-Nice with the Mediterranean coast. It provides a stunning backdrop for this impressive sculpture.
Some believe the nine beams represent the nine valleys converging towards Nice. However, Venet states that his works have their own identity. They possess neither meaning nor defined symbolism. The sculpture invites individual interpretation.
So here we stand before the Neuf lignes obliques. We admire its imposing presence and contemplate its significance. Whether it represents valleys, mountains, or simply itself, this artwork has certainly left its mark on Nice.
