“Who would have thought a cemetery could be so spacious?” Neuer Friedhof in Bremen might surprise you. It’s one of Bremen’s largest cemeteries, spanning almost 14 hectares. Its history begins in the early 20th century. Bremen’s population was booming, thanks to rapid industrialization. Existing cemeteries couldn’t keep up, including the old Aumund cemetery. The city decided a new communal cemetery was needed. They chose a site in the northern Bremen district of Vegesack. The design fell to landscape architect Christian Heinrich Roselius, son of the famous Bremen patron and merchant Ludwig Roselius. Architect Otto Blendermann built a chapel for funeral and farewell ceremonies. Originally in the center, it now stands near the entrance due to multiple expansions. Neuer Friedhof is a particularly green cemetery. Its burial grounds are surrounded by expansive lawns and a variety of plants. It also houses an architecturally impressive memorial to the victims of World War II. Additionally, Neuer Friedhof has an Islamic section in the south. Established in 2000 and expanded in 2015, it caters to Bremen’s diverse community. Neuer Friedhof offers a tranquil escape within bustling Bremen.
