Hidden within Bremen’s Neustadt borough lies Neuenlande, a district with a story as complex as its name. Neuenlande, meaning “new lands,” might conjure images of idyllic countryside. However, this area holds a darker chapter from World War II. Neuenlande became home to a Nazi satellite camp, chillingly nicknamed “Bremen-Kriegsmarine” due to its association with the German navy’s construction projects. From August to November 1944, 1,000 men, mostly French and Soviet prisoners, endured harsh conditions here. Their forced labor focused on building a massive submarine bunker codenamed “Hornisse,” or “Hornet,” near the Deschimag shipyards. Imagine these prisoners transported daily, a five-kilometer journey through Bremen’s streets, often crammed onto lorries. Their destination: the bunker site, intended to manufacture submarine parts for the “Valentin” dockyard in Bremen-Farge. Neuenlande’s connection to this wartime industry highlights the widespread impact of the Nazi regime, even in seemingly ordinary locations. A memorial plaque at the former Bremen steel works now commemorates the prisoners’ suffering. Yet, the “Hornisse” bunker itself, though unfinished, stands as a stark reminder of this dark period. Repurposed as the foundation for a modern building, it lacks any on-site acknowledgment of its history. Neuenlande, therefore, stands as a quiet testament to a painful past, a place where “new lands” were tragically intertwined with wartime labor and suffering.
