This urban district has been making headlines for decades for its connection to aviation. Dozens of companies working in the aerospace industry have found a home in Neuenland. Even before the rise of the aerospace industry, Neuenland was known for its connection to travelling. Over 800 years ago, this was the spot where the first road leading out of Bremen towards the south was built. This street eventually grew into the main street of Neuenland, the Neuenlander Strasse. During the 13th century, a village grew up alongside this road. The village and the area were named Neuenland, from the Old German word “Nyenlande,” meaning “New Land.” The name reflected the newly developed land reclaimed from the marshes just south of Bremen.
Today, however, Neuenland is most known for its connection to the sky, and the many aerospace companies that call it home. The district is a hub of technological innovation and progress. So the next time you’re catching a flight out of Bremen, make sure to take a moment to appreciate the history and industry of this special place.
