Did you know the Neue Nikolaischule in Leipzig boasts a history stretching back to 1512? That’s right. This impressive building before us isn’t just a school. It’s a living testament to Leipzig’s rich educational heritage. The Neue Nikolaischule is the second oldest school in Leipzig after the Thomasschule. The school’s story is one of resilience. Its original location was on Nikolaikirchhof next to the Nikolaikirche. It remained there for centuries before moving to its present location. This building on Schőnbachstraβe was constructed between 1914 and 1916. Imagine students studying under gas lamps in the early days. That’s before the building received electric lighting during renovations. Bathrooms were added a year later. The Second World War brought significant disruption. Frequent bombing raids often interrupted classes. Heating was a major issue. Lessons were sometimes held in shifts due to limited heating capabilities. A devastating air raid on December 4 1943 inflicted heavy damage. Parts of the building and the gymnasium burned to the ground.
After the war’s devastation the school relocated to Heinrichstraße. Later divisions and name changes followed. The school eventually found its way back to its current home on Schőnbachstraβe. In 1992 it was named Gymnasium Schőnbachstraβe. The building was added to Leipzig’s list of historical monuments. A major renovation project ensured the building was preserved. Finally in 1995 the school was officially reborn as the Neue Nikolaischule. This happened when the existing Gymnasium Schőnbachstraβe was renamed.
The Neue Nikolaischule continued to evolve. In 2009 a project celebrating 500 years of the Nikolaischule began. Students researched the history of the old and new schools and the Nikolaikirchhof. Exhibitions and a grand celebration marked the 500th anniversary in 2012. The school even has a student-run catering company. This business not only serves students but also caters large events for the city administration. This shows the school’s commitment to practical skills and community engagement.
Today the Neue Nikolaischule stands as a modern facility. It features well-equipped classrooms two sports halls and access to additional sports facilities. The school also has a library and a multipurpose hall. The hall was even renamed the Eginhart-Lehmann-Halle in honor of a former principal.
