Neue Brüderkirche

It inherited the legacy of the Alte Brüderkirche, the oldest surviving church building in Kassel. The Alte Brüderkirche, completed in 1376, served as the community’s spiritual home for centuries. It witnessed the Reformation, sheltered French Huguenots, and endured the ravages of war. Bombed in 1943, the Alte Brüderkirche was painstakingly rebuilt and rededicated in 1955. However, with the city’s changing landscape, the old church found itself outside the parish boundaries. The community needed a new space, a new home, closer to its heart. Thus, the Neue Brüderkirche was born, carrying with it cherished pieces of the past. The pews, the organ, even the very name, all migrated to this new space, a tangible link to a rich heritage. The Neue Brüderkirche isn’t just a place of worship. It’s a vibrant hub of community life. It’s a place where art and faith intertwine. The “Knopfwandteppich,” a unique artwork created by Lilian von Philippovich, adorns the church walls, a mosaic of 30,000 donated buttons. The funds allocated for the tower were instead donated to development projects in Africa, a testament to the church’s commitment to social justice. The former parish hall was transformed into the Stadtteilzentrum Wesertor, a community center offering a range of services and activities. The Neue Brüderkirche is more than bricks and mortar.
