Have you ever wondered why a dovecot was built? Right in front of us is the Nether Liberton Dovecot, one of the largest in the Edinburgh area! The Nether Liberton Dovecot is a fascinating historical building. It was constructed in the early 17th century and was once the manorial dovecot of Inch House. This dovecot is incredibly large, measuring 36 feet 9 inches by 19 feet 6 inches. It has a whopping 2,072 nest holes. That’s quite a few doves! The pigeons entering the dovecot through 36 holes half way down the roof and 5 holes in the south wall of each chamber below the eaves. The dovecot has two chambers. This structure is a testament to the wealth of the owner at the time. The two chambers in the dovecot served as both security and meant that the birds were disturbed less, giving them more space. The dovecot, a testament to a bygone era, is a unique and memorable sight.
