Here lies a story etched in stone. We are standing at the Nesher Cemetery. It is a place of rest and remembrance. This cemetery is more than just a burial ground. It holds a significant place in history.

Nesher Cemetery is located in Haifa District, Israel. It is the resting place for many. Some graves belong to people with unknown birth and death years. The cemetery is maintained by the Istiklal Waqf Entrusted Committee in Haifa.

This cemetery was built in 1930. It is associated with the depopulated village of Balad Elsheikh. The Nesher Cemetery spans 43 donams. This makes it one of the largest historic cemeteries in Palestine. It embraces the grave of the Mujahid Ezeldein Elkassam. Elkassam died on November 20, 1935. He and many other martyrs rest here. They fought for freedom against colonialism.

Balad al-Sheikh was depopulated on April 24, 1948.

The Nesher Cemetery has a Find a Grave Cemetery ID of 2185109. There are some memorials.

The municipal emblem of Nesher has multiple references. The vulture represents the name of the city. It also represents the cement factory. The four hills represent the mountainous terrain. They also represent the four original neighborhoods. These neighborhoods are Ben Dor, Tel Hanan, Nesher, and Givat Nesher. The factory and chimney represent the industrial foundation. The tree represents growth and prosperity.

Nesher itself was founded in 1924. It was founded as a worker’s town. This was for the Nesher Cement factory. The factory was established in September 1923. Michael Pollack, a Jewish industrialist from Russia, established it. In 1929, Arabs from Balad al-Sheikh attacked the factory.

Thousands of Jewish immigrants settled in Nesher in 1948. They came from Europe, Iraq, and North Africa. The town expanded over Balad al-Sheikh.

Today, Nesher’s population is mostly Jewish. The city has an education system. It comprises elementary schools, a high school, and kindergartens.

Nesher Cemetery connects us to the past. It reminds us of the village. It commemorates those who fought. Take a moment to reflect on their stories.
