Could a simple stone hold the key to an entire country’s roadmap? Here at the Neptunusz Stone, or more accurately, the Zero Kilometer Stone, it does. This unassuming marker, a ten-foot tall limestone sculpture shaped like a zero, isn’t just a quirky piece of art. It’s the literal center of Hungary’s road network. Every distance to Budapest on Hungarian highway signs is measured from this very spot. The Neptunusz Stone rests on a base marked “KM,” surrounded by the faded names and distances of Hungarian cities. These names point outwards, like spokes on a wheel, towards the locations they represent. Most people rush past, eager to admire the Chain Bridge or ascend Buda Castle Hill via the nearby funicular. They sit on the benches surrounding the Neptunusz Stone without a second glance. They miss the significance of this quiet monument. Before 1975, other markers held this important designation. The first zero kilometer point was at the Royal Palace. After the Chain Bridge’s completion in 1849, the marker moved closer to its current location. The Neptunusz Stone, as we see it today, was created by Miklós Borsos in 1975. Borsos also designed tombs for prominent figures in Budapest’s Kerepesi Cemetery. So, as you stand here, at the heart of Hungary’s road system, remember this isn’t just a stone. It’s a symbol of connection, a testament to the importance of infrastructure, and a hidden gem in the bustling heart of Budapest.
