The Neptune Sculpture, also known as the River God Fountain, has graced Melbourne since 1862. Crafted by Victoria’s renowned sculptor, Charles Summers, this larger-than-life figure, triumphantly holding aloft a clamshell-shaped fountain, originally celebrated the arrival of a reticulated water supply to the city from the Yan Yean reservoir. This marked a turning point for Melbourne, ushering in an age of growth and prosperity, with the Neptune Sculpture symbolizing that progress. The sculpture’s journey hasn’t been without its bumps. Deemed old-fashioned in the 1950s, the Neptune Sculpture was removed from its prominent position and replaced with a more modern piece. Rediscovered decades later in a council depot, it was restored and returned to the Fitzroy Gardens, albeit in a new location. This time, it stands atop a rocky outcrop, a design reminiscent of its original setting. Today, the Neptune Sculpture is more than just a fountain.
